People are not perfect. We all make mistakes in life......

But when we hide our mistakes, they become an inner affliction.
From Dharma Master Cheng Yen's Talks

I remember a few decades ago, one male volunteer had trouble getting along with other volunteers. He had quite a strong personality and would often offend people. As a result, people were upset with him. When they complained about him among themselves, unavoidably they would bring up his past, such as how badly he used to treat his wife and children. After learning of his troubles, I approached him about it. He told me, "Master, I used to behave badly before joining Tzu Chi. Now that I have changed, why must people bring up my past again?" I told him, "Instead of having people talk behind your back, why don't you tell people your life story and show them how you have changed?" "How am I supposed to do that? It's so embarrassing to talk about my past." "How about thinking of it as a way to seek self-improvement?" I replied.

He was skeptical about how this could help him. Still, I encouraged him to reveal his faults and errors in front of other volunteers so that people wouldn't talk about him behind his back anymore. One day, at a gathering, he started to talk, "Recently, I offended one of our volunteers. Master said that though I didn't have any bad intentions, my personality was a bit too strong. Actually, besides that person, I have offended a lot of people here too. So, I would like to apologize to all of you. Please forgive me. I know that a lot of people have been talking about my past, so Master said I should tell everybody my life story. Then it'll be out in the open and everyone will know about it." This volunteer then spent some time talking about how bad his behavior had been in his youth, what a good life he had led in the prime of life, how he acted after he got married, how badly he treated his wife and children, and what mistakes he had made in running his business.

After he finished talking, I looked at the volunteers in the room and asked them to put their hands up if they had never made any mistakes in their life. No one raised their hand. I then asked if they had ever made the same mistakes as this volunteer had. Some people answered, "Yes." I told the volunteers that they should be brave and reveal their mistakes to others, just like that male volunteer.

When we're afraid of letting people know of our past wrongs and we bury them in our heart, we create afflictions for ourselves. If we can open our hearts and reveal our faults, if we can repent in front of people and express our determination to transform ourselves, people around us can help us. When they see us about to make the same mistakes again, they can remind us not to repeat them.

This is why we often see Tzu Chi volunteers sharing their life story, talking about the errors they have made in the past and how they have transformed themselves to become the volunteer they are now. With the help of Tzu Chi friends, they learn to overcome fear and develop the courage to improve themselves.

Taiji For Osteoporosis Course

Supported by National Arthritis Foundation (NAF), Council For Third Age (C3A) and Ministry of Community Youth & Sports (MCYS)

I participated as an instructor for the Taiji For Osteoporosis course, organised by the Resident's Committee (RC), class of 6 Oct to 15 Dec 2009.
Osteoporosis is the reduction of bone density as one ages. This translates to weaker bones, which can facture easily in an accident (eg. a fall).

Studies have shown that regular TaiJiQuan practitioners have better balance, improved posture and are less likely to fall. Other studies have also shown that TaiJiQuan may be able to prevent bone loss.
This programme is based on an modified low-impact TaiJiQuan form which aims to use all major body joints, in a practical, sustainable way.

Testimonials

Chuah Ai Mee , 61, Author, Reiki Master, Ex-librarian & Therapist:

Learning Tai Chi with Trainer Gina, my chronic neck and shoulder ache has decreased dramatically, my posture is even better, and my endurance has increased to the extent that I can walk up 11 floors before I start breathing hard. I feel even more energetic after a tai-chi class with her. I love the way she fine-tunes my posture and movement. And yes, she's patient!

Seow Siew Bee, 59, IT Professional:
I used to be against practicing TaiJiQuan as I thought it was meant for old and tubby people. However, I decided to give it a try after being recommended to Gina by a good friend. After joining Gina’s TaiJi workshop, I realized that it has strengthened my knees and I am now able to climb up more stairs and walk farther distances without tiring as easily as before. My mindset towards learning TaiJiQuan has now changed, as it really enhances muscle endurance and believe me, it is a good work out!

Ms Tan Seng Hong, Ex-lecturer:
I am able climb staircases without feeling pain on the knees, and my sinus has become better after learning from Gina. Now, I can walk with my body upright as I used to hunchback since young.

Mr Thomas Lim, 62:
TaiJi is fantastic! ........
I was cleaning the celing with a step stool, suddently my step stool fell off to one side as it cannot sustain by body weight, I guess!? To my surprised! I landed on the floor without hurting myself with both feet on the ground. Wow! I just attended TaiJi session with Gina about 24 sessions, although I still did not complete or master the basic 24 steps but I realise that the TaiJi stances are very much important than the TaiJi forms.
It trains us to balance with our body muscle endurance, in short is about muscle controlling. With the constain reminder by TaiJi Trainer, I am very much aware about how to keep my posture upright all the time.
Thanks to Gina!

Stop & Think Awhile....

We sometimes see the elderly hunched and looking weak....

...but have we ever seen a serious TaiJiQuan practitioner hunching?

TaiJiQuan's Focus On Core Muscle Training

Core muscles? What's that? And why should we care?

We all remember our younger days when our elders always reminded us to "stand straight, tummy in, chest out, shoulders back". When we started working, many of us have suffered backaches due to many hours of bad posture behind the desk, or perhaps due to carrying something heavy.

Core muscles reside in the area of the belly, mid and lower back, and peripherally include the hips, shoulders and neck. They control your posture, balance and stability, which in turn determines how comfortably we can perform daily tasks and more. pedia.org provides an excellent description here.

In recent years, leading medical practitioners in the US and Europe have singled out Core Muscle Training as a vital foundation for all other movements. This was explicitly explained in the Key Of Core Training: No Gym, No Problem article in Newsweek's February 2006 issue.

"No muscle group is more important than the body's core muscles. They are the vital foundation for all other movement. The muscles of the torso stabilize the spine and provide a solid foundation for developing strength in your shoulders, arms and legs."

TaiJiQuan's basic stances trains our core muscles. More important than that, it trains our minds to be aware of our core muscles.

Mayoclinic.com gives 7 more reasons why we should strengthen our core muscles.
