I don't see the problem here Ace. Friend or no Friend, you see an Adult sodomizing a Child, and I think it was one with some mental defects also, and you not only report it to University Authorities but also to the Police and IMMEDIATELY. There are NO grays here.

Paterno isn't "going out". PSU has tried to force him out of the past 5
years, but JoePa wins the behind the scenes political power plays
everytime.
I'll bet JoePa held on until now knowing this was coming. He didn't want his successor shouldering this burden, like his ex-player Coach Golden inherited Miami's current woes.

Superb synopsis of how Joe-Pa keeps his position. He should have been pushed out years ago.
I doubt anything else he did compares to turning a blind eye to child molestation.

I said that. But we have seen this cover-up happen again and again. Do you think all the people covering up Evil doing Evil for the sake of Evil?
Or would you agree that they probably convince themselves that it's best to cover it up via the route I've suggested?

I chose that word "rat" intentionally, because that's how it feels to the people who find out about the misbehavior of a friend. It feels like ratting.
And, let's face it, whistleblowers aren't exactly supported through the process on many occasions.

The last incident described (victim # involved janitorial staff, most of whom were new to campus. They were afraid to lose their jobs.
The grad assistant would also be risking losing his job. But he should have called police. I had pictured him as some 21 year old kid who didn't know better, but a 28 year old should know better. As should his dad.

The fear of ratting out someone famous, popular, and powerful.
Not as easy as it sounds.

One good thing at our current university is that the university counsel is the state's attorney general. It's pretty clear in PSU's case that the counsel (who was also counsel for the scumbag's foundation) mishandled the case.

Yes I think they probably rationalize not reporting it to the police in many ways. I am just pointing out that to ME, there would be no ifs, ands, or buts about what to do. I guess I did not make that clear, I was talking about myself. I'm a rather simple guy and while I can see plenty of nuances in certain situations, in ones like this I see things in vivid Black and White.

It's the way you stated. The pedophile cries, "This was the first time", friends back off. Check out the old clips of "To Catch A Predator". Every creep says the same thing, "It was the first time".

This is probably because of our instance on using the incredibly
"sanitary" term "psychological" and not calling it a "perversion,"
anymore.
Doesn't have anything to do with it. Psychology, as an applied science, has always sucked.
Also because we believe that people are held in thrall by their "psyche"
and couldn't possibly exert any, you know, self control.
The problem is that sending a pedophile up the river isn't really an incentive for one to change one's behavior. It's a perverse incentive to cover up better -- hence, you get rape-and-murder or rape-kidnapping-and-imprisonment.
That, and the whole "registered sex offender" thing is stupid. If you don't think you're going to change the offender's behavior, then lock them up forever. Don't play games.

"This is actually a more difficult question than most people credit it as."
No. This is not a difficult question.
You were once a 10 year old boy. And those of who were never boys have either birthed boys who turned 10 or are related to boys who were once 10. Can the child's innocence be returned to him? How would your life be different and perhaps difficult had this happened to you?
Living with the truth shouldn't kill these men no more than it has silently suffocated the victim(s). They areALL cowards. Any moral man would've turned this guy out in a heartbeat. . . after beating him to a pulp.
If they believe in mercy, then they'd better hope God shows them some.

The question that the MFM keeps skirting is this: is the guy actually a pedophile, or a chickenhawk?
Shameful, disgustingbehavior either way, but if this guy was gay and out, I can't help but think the media would be putting a pillow over the face of this story, trying to deprive it of oxygen.

I was initially feeling more generous to Joe Pa and the grad assistant, but really they had no excuse. No one seems to doubt that it was a very young boy involved and Paterno's testimony made it clear it was sexual contact. So he should have pushed for the police to become involved, imho. Or encouraged the grad assistant to pursue it.
